Sexism Remains
Pay wage, job opportunity, education and acceptance are all effected when it comes to gender. This is apparent in our current society, in literature, and through our history. Despite many major improvements in this area, such as allowing women to vote, allowing women to do "men's" work, and more, we still struggle with coming to full equality in society. This was a major topic within the last month in our class.
Sexism has been apparent in many of the literary works that we have explored in the past month. One of the works that truly stuck out to me was The Yellow Wallpaper. This literary work just showed how men belittled women when they knew that something was wrong. A man allowed his wife to go into a state of insanity to show to him that something really was wrong. Another work in which sexism was very apparent was in A Dolls House. This story showed sexism on the level of women being completely reliant on men. The time in which these stories were written was before any sort of equality was set between women and men.
In our times we still deal with sexist issues. The issues that we face today are much less pressing than they were during the time in which these two stories were written, but they still continue to have an affect women around the world. In our country we have sexist issues when it comes to job equality and pay equality. Women in the work force are treated with less respect than men are. They are treated as if they don't know what they are doing or as if they can't do the same things that a man can do. I personally believe that no matter how hard we try, we will never be able to fully eradicate sexism from our country.
In my eyes, sexism is the most degrading thing that someone can deal with. Despite the stories we read only pertaining to sexism against women, I believe we also have issues with sexism against men. Many things are expected of men and if they aren't achieved then the man is sometimes seen as "girly" or less of a man. Sexism is an on going issue that is almost impossible to completely destroy. Sexism all comes from a state of mind.
